The Labour results from the European elections by region are set out below. It is clear that the fall in our vote in Wales is higher than anywhere else. Even if you allow for the fact that the vote in most other regions was lower than in Wales to begin with, this is a signifiant loss. And we did significantly worse than the North-East of England, which like Wales has a high Labour base. These were dreadful results, and cannot simply be explained away by a reduced turn-out because unlike in England there were no council elections. In England, in any case, the performance in council elections and European results varied. As I have said before, we need an honest debate about what went wrong and what we should do now. Have we learned the lessons of the 2007 Assembly elections or the 2008 local government elections? I don't think so.
